Have a worry-free silly season with your dog

Summer, silly season and sausage sizzles - some may say its the best time of year, especially your little pup. We don’t want to be thinking about anything but fun, so its best to be prepared with some little tips that’ll keep you and your dog happy this summer.

Be ready for medical emergencies. It's not fun to think about but super important we’re prepared for the worst. Many emergencies happen over the Christmas break - from choking, allergies, pancreatitis, heatstroke, and other accidents. Always know your local vet’s location, number and open hours. They may be closed during public holidays, so also note your local 24/7 emergency vet, too.

Prepare alternative treats to give your doggo. Let’s be honest we all want to treat ourselves this time of year including your dog. But often guests who don’t have dogs don’t realise that they can’t eat certain foods (think ham, chocolate, garlic, grapes, etc). So prepare a little bowl of dog-friendly treats that they can give them so no one gets FOMO.

Keep your dog cool. We know you know, but it’s always a great reminder to have that extra water bowl filled up, a cool and shady place inside for your dog, and take them for walks outside of the midday heat.

Don’t forget your routines. This may seem obvious, but us lucky ones fortunate enough to get time off work, its easy to slip out of routine and chill out (you deserve it btw). But don’t forget that your dog doesn’t know its holiday season, and they’re still keen for their walks, toilet breaks, and enrichment activities. They may start acting confused, destructive or bored if their routine shifts too much.

Avoid the Christmas tree destruction. The dreaded knocking-down of the Christmas tree, or stealing decorations, can be managed with a little distance. We recommend putting a playpen fence around your tree to keep them away. If your dog still has too much temptation and might get through, think about switching out any hazardous decorations completely.

Aaaaaand have fun! Enjoy this special time of year with your family, friends and beloved furry creatures.
