Ideas to keep your dog active and dry in winter

The temperature is starting to drop and the days are getting shorter, so keeping your dog active (and dry!) may be becoming a bit of a challenge.

That’s why we’ve put together a few simple, practical ways to help your dog stay warm, active, and entertained—even when the weather isn’t on our side.

1. Indoor games for mental stimulation 🧩

Bring the fun indoors! Puzzle toys and DIY treat scavenger hunts are great ways to keep your pooch mentally stimulated and entertained. Or how about teaching them a new trick or even brushing up on old ones.

2. Short and more frequent walks 🚶🏻

Instead of going on a long trek, try shorter but more frequent outings. A few 10- to 15-minute walks throughout the day are definitely better than one long, soggy adventure. Just be sure to towel off your furry friend when you get back inside to help prevent chills and irritation from wet grass or muddy paws.

3. Invest in weather appropriate gear 🧥

Grab your dog a thick coat, a cosy jumper, or even a lightweight waterproof jacket to help them stay warm and dry. Some dogs also benefit from booties to protect their sensitive paws from cold or wet surfaces —just make sure they fit well and your dog is comfortable wearing them.

4. Make use of covered outdoor areas 🛖

Got a veranda, garage, or carport? These can be great spots for a quick game of fetch or a few laps out of the rain. If you’re making use of an apartment block garage, just be extra mindful of cars coming and going to keep things safe.

5. Playdates and doggy daycare 🐕

Social time can be just as important as physical exercise. If your dog enjoys the company of other pups, consider arranging indoor playdates with your neighbours’ pets or enrolling them in a local doggy daycare. A change of scenery and some new friends can be a great way to break up the winter monotony.

Make sure to dry your pup off properly after any outdoor fun to help prevent chills and discomfort.

With a little planning, we can fight off the winter blues, for both our pets and ourselves. Keeping your dog physically active and mentally engaged will help them stay healthy, happy, and balanced all season long. And who knows—you might even start looking forward to those crisp winter walks!
